Microdermabrasion Aftercare: Essential First 48-Hour Routine

The most important rule after microdermabrasion is simple: treat your skin like it’s freshly polished. For the first 48 hours, keep it cool, clean, and protected. That means no direct sun, no heavy sweating, no hot water, and no active ingredients. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliation treatment that removes dead skin cells, so your skin is temporarily more sensitive. If you protect the barrier now, you’ll usually see the smoother texture and brighter look you came in for.
Your microdermabrasion “do not mess this up” list (0 to 48 hours)
Right after your facial and microdermabrasion appointment, I want you thinking: calm and protected. A little pinkness, mild tightness, or a light tingle can be normal, especially the first day. The goal is to keep irritation low so your skin settles quickly.
For 48 hours, skip: direct sun, tanning beds, hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, intense workouts, and anything that makes you flush or sweat heavily.
Cleaning, moisturizing, and SPF (keep it basic)
I generally recommend washing twice a day with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and using lukewarm water. Pat dry. Then apply a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog pores. Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning, and reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors.
Makeup and “active” skincare
If you can go makeup-free for the rest of the day, do it. If you need makeup, keep it minimal and avoid heavy, full-coverage products that tend to cling to dryness. Hold off on retinol, AHA/BHA acids, scrubs, and strong vitamin C serums. This is also not the time for a chemical peel, dermaplane touch-ups, or at-home devices. I want your skin to rest.
Days 3 to 7: how to keep the glow without getting dry or flaky
A lot of people feel great the next day and then accidentally overdo it. If you notice light flaking or dryness, that’s your cue to keep things gentle, not to exfoliate harder. Let the skin do its thing.
Keep doing: gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and daily SPF. If you’re commuting around Roselle, especially near East Nerge Road, remember UV still hits hard in late summer and early fall, even on “not that sunny” days.
Avoid: picking at flakes, facial waxing, and scheduling another aggressive exfoliating service too soon. If you’re also booking waxing near me services or brazilian waxing, I’ll help you space things out so your skin stays calm.
For pools, hot tubs, and lakes, I typically advise waiting 48 to 72 hours. Chlorine, heat, and bacteria are a rough combo for freshly exfoliated skin. If you have a busy weekend with school activities, festivals, or a golf outing near Medinah, protecting your skin is what keeps microdermabrasion low-downtime.
The simple product routine I like after microderm (no fancy steps)
You don’t need a 10-step routine to keep your results. You need the right types of products, used consistently.
- Cleanser: fragrance-free, non-foaming or gentle low-foam. No exfoliating beads or acids.
- Moisturizer: calming and non-comedogenic. Ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid are usually a great fit for barrier support.
- SPF: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day. If you’re outside, reapply every two hours.
Retinol and acids (AHA/BHA) usually wait 3 to 7 days, or until your skin feels fully calm and back to normal. If you’re not sure, ask me. I’d rather you pause an extra day than set off irritation that lasts all week.
If something feels “off, ” call me, and I’ll walk you through it
Most post-microdermabrasion redness and sensitivity tends to settle within 48 to 72 hours. Light dryness can show up as your skin recalibrates. What I don’t want you doing is guessing through discomfort.
Reach out if you notice: redness that’s getting worse after day two, swelling, severe pain, oozing, or anything that looks like infection. I’ll tell you what’s normal, what to stop using, and what the next step should be.
I’m easy to find for quick follow-ups if you’re coming from Roselle, Itasca, Bloomingdale, Schaumburg, Medinah, or Glendale Heights. The East Nerge Road area is convenient for commuters, and I can often suggest appointment times that work before or after Metra routines, especially if you’re trying to avoid peak sun on the way in.
If you’re searching “facials near me, ” “beauty center near me, ” “medspa near me, ” or “medical spa near me, ” I want you to feel confident you’ll get clear guidance, not a quick service and a goodbye. Microdermabrasion is one of my favorite reset treatments, and it pairs well in a longer-term plan that can include microneedling, microchanneling, RF skin tightening, or even body sculpting options like ultrasonic cavitation and laser lipo when that’s your goal.
Want me to map out your next step? I’m happy to recommend a timeline for microdermabrasion, a facial plan, or when to schedule a chemical peel so your skin keeps improving without getting irritated.
